Your information, handled with care
Last updated: July 6, 2026
The Steady Hand ("we," "us") is a personal newsletter written by Cherith. This policy explains what we collect when you visit thesteadyhandnewsletter.com or subscribe to the letter, and what we do with it. If anything here is unclear, email cherith@thesteadyhandnewsletter.com and we'll answer.
What we collect
- Your name and email when you subscribe. That's the only personal information we ask for.
- Signup context — the page or form you subscribed from (e.g. "landing-hero") and the date and time.
- Email engagement — whether an email was delivered, opened, or bounced. We use this to keep the list healthy and stop sending to addresses that no longer work.
- Basic request logs from our hosting and email providers (IP address, browser, timestamps). We do not run advertising trackers.
Cookies we set
sh_sub— a subscriber-recognition cookie so you don't have to re-enter your email to read subscriber-only issues. Expires after one year.- A short-lived session cookie used when you sign in with your email.
- Google reCAPTCHA sets its own cookies to tell humans from bots on the subscribe form. See the reCAPTCHA notice below.
How we use it
Only for the things you'd expect:
- Sending you the weekly letter and any account emails you triggered.
- Keeping the subscriber list accurate and honoring unsubscribes.
- Protecting the site from spam and abuse.
- Understanding, in aggregate, which letters are being read — so future issues can be better.
We do not sell your information, rent it, or share it with third parties for their marketing.
Who processes data on our behalf
We use a small number of trusted service providers to actually run the site and send the mail. They only see what they need to do their job:
- Our hosting and database provider — stores the subscriber list and serves the website.
- Our email delivery provider — delivers the weekly letter and any account emails to your inbox.
- Google reCAPTCHA — helps block bot signups.
Google reCAPTCHA
The subscribe form is protected by reCAPTCHA. Your use of reCAPTCHA is subject to Google's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
How long we keep it
We keep your subscriber record for as long as you're subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we retain a minimal record (your email in a suppression list) so we can honor your unsubscribe going forward. You can ask us to delete that record by emailing cherith@thesteadyhandnewsletter.com.
Your rights
You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every email or on our unsubscribe page. Depending on where you live (for example, the EU, UK, or California), you may also have the right to access, correct, or delete the information we hold about you, or to object to certain uses. To exercise any of these rights, email cherith@thesteadyhandnewsletter.com.
Children
The Steady Hand is written for adult caregivers and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we update this policy, we'll change the "Last updated" date above. Meaningful changes will be mentioned in an upcoming letter.
